Answer:

In the context of hot yoga, 'grip' is one of the most critical safety and performance features of a yoga mat or mat towel. It refers to the surface's ability to provide high-traction and prevent your hands and feet from slipping, a significant challenge when the mat becomes wet with sweat. A mat with poor grip in wet conditions can be both frustrating and dangerous, increasing the risk of falls and injuries. There are two primary approaches to achieving good grip in hot yoga. The first is the mat itself. Many modern yoga mats are engineered with materials that have a 'sticky' surface. Materials like natural rubber and polyurethane (PU) are prized for their 'dry grip' and often maintain some traction when wet. Some specialized hot yoga mats even have a unique top layer that is designed to absorb moisture and become even grippier as you sweat. The second, and more common, solution is to use a non-slip mat towel. These towels are made from absorbent microfiber and are designed to be laid over your regular yoga mat. They serve a dual purpose: they absorb the profuse sweat, keeping it from pooling on your mat, and they provide excellent grip. Most hot yoga towels have silicone nubs or a special backing on the underside to keep them from bunching up, and their top surface is often designed to increase traction when damp. For many practitioners, a high-quality mat towel is the single most important piece of gear for a safe and stable hot yoga practice.
