Answer:

Proper hygiene for your gear is absolutely critical in hot yoga to prevent the growth of bacteria, fungus, and odor. Your mat and towel require different cleaning methods. Your yoga mat towel absorbs a tremendous amount of sweat and should be treated like any other piece of workout clothing. It must be machine-washed after every single class. Use a standard laundry detergent, but it's a good idea to avoid using fabric softener, as it can coat the fibers and reduce the towel's absorbency and grip over time. Tumble dry on low or hang to dry. Your yoga mat requires daily maintenance. Immediately after each class, you should wipe it down thoroughly. Use a dedicated yoga mat cleaning spray or make your own by filling a spray bottle with mostly water, a splash of white vinegar or witch hazel (which have antibacterial properties), and a few drops of an antimicrobial essential oil like tea tree, lavender, or eucalyptus. Spray the entire surface of the mat and wipe it clean with a cloth. Allow the mat to air dry completely before rolling it up. This daily wipe-down will prevent grime and bacteria from building up and will significantly prolong the life of your mat.
