Answer:

Hot Yin Yoga is a quiet, meditative, and profound style of yoga that involves holding passive floor-based poses for extended periods, typically ranging from 3 to 7 minutes. The primary goal of Yin Yoga is not to target the muscles (the 'yang' tissues), but to apply gentle, long-held stress to the deeper, stiffer connective tissues like the ligaments, tendons, and fascia, which increases circulation in the joints and improves flexibility. The reason the studio temperature is intentionally lower for this style, usually in the 'warm' range of 85-90°F (29-32°C), is based on this specific anatomical focus. To effectively stress the connective tissues, the muscles need to be relaxed. If the room were too hot, the muscles would become very pliable and 'steal' the stretch, preventing the therapeutic stress from reaching the deeper fascial and ligamentous layers. The gentle warmth of a Hot Yin class is just enough to soothe the nervous system, relax the muscles, and make the long holds more comfortable and accessible, without overheating the muscles to the point where the deeper benefits are lost. This practice is a beautiful complement to more dynamic, muscular (yang) styles of yoga. It cultivates patience and stillness, teaches you to sit with discomfort, and offers a deep release of tension that is often held in the joints and connective tissues.
